Eurocode 5: timber design essentials for engineers
A fusion of engineering guidance on EC5, comprising an overview, material properties, design loads, calculating deformations and limiting vibrations and designing with cross-laminated timber, filtch beams and joints using multiple fasteners.
The adoption of Eurocodes was a milestone in harmonising the approach to the design of structures across Europe.
However, there is another big advantage for designers using the Eurocodes. Steel and concrete designers have used the limit state method for some time while timber designers have retained the permissible stress method. The evolution of the Eurocodes’ unified approach to design, regardless of the materials used, means that designers who are already well versed in the design of concrete and steel structures will now have little difficulty working with timber.
- Read moreWith every major design change there are ‘straightforward’ and ‘difficult’ aspects. This publication covers the complete process of assessing loads, identifying material properties and solving the more difficult aspects of designing timber to Eurocode 5.
The objective of this publication is to combine engineering guidance documents on EC5 into one, easy-to-use reference. - Contents• An overview of EC5
• Material properties
• Assessing design loads
• Calculating deformations (more commonly known as deflections in the UK)
• Limiting vibrations
• Designing joints using multiple fasteners
• Designing flitch beams (laminated assemblies of timber and steel plates)
• Designing with cross-laminated timber
• An example calculation comparing BS5268 and EC5. - Product information
